We met the staff of the Cooperative NuovaRicerca.AgenziaRes of Fermo, represented by Mario Toppi with whom we made an interview.

Please tell us how many beneficiaries are involved into the project, in which field, under which criteria they have been selected and which are the results?

In the project Communitas, in Fermo and suburbian areas, ten interns have been selected. They have started their internships in differente moments; in fact some of them are going to finish the experience and others are doing it now. From the beginning, the decision was to combine the actions of the Sprar of NuovaRicerca.AgenziaRes with the possibilities offered by this project Communitas: a preparatory training has been proposed; it is both learning and situational. Thanks to the internships in the productive sectors with “structural” incorporation potentiality, we created partnerhips and collaborative networks with the training agencies. The internships are also developped in order to face some aspects like seasonality, precariousness and illegal labour.

Specifically, the internships are carried on in these sectors:

. precise mechanical (3 in the Fermo province and with the Ipsia school)

. fish shop (3 San Benedetto del Tronto and with IAL Marche area sud)

. social cooperative B type, assembly of mechanical items (1)

. hotels (1)

. shoe industry (2)

The selection replied to the preliminary requirements of the project (international protection holder) and the observation and participation of the training experiences and the intersection with the potential company’s context. This has been made in collaboration with the partners and the internal orientation workshops, especially the new organization/cooperative B type born inside the NuovaRicerca. It helped the evaluation of professional learning and labour rules (functional for the intersection with internships proposals and situational learning) and trasversal behaviours (sense of responsability, respect of rules, sense of initiative and autonomy); it was functional for the housing support.

Some of the internships are in progress so a final evaluation shall be made only at the end. At any rate, any internship is useful and possibily ongoing.

Regarding the already closed internships, the results are:

. the experience in the cooperative B type has been transformed into a regular contract (conformed to the real possibility of the company that is a start up recently created)

. the experience in the shoe industry is now a regular contract

.the two experiences in the mechanical companies have been transformed into a regular annual contract (with the prespective to improve the qualification and develop the autonomy  in the job) and in an extension of the experience that the intern decide to stop.

In your opinion, which are the most important aspects of this project?

The possibility to integrate the action of the Sprar, like the training with more considerable internships; this allowed to increase the analisys of the economic territorla context and especially to test and verify an insertation strategy in more structural productive sectors instead of the onse easily accessible.  We noticed the real request of the touristic field: in fact we were able to do some agreements with hotels and restaurants managers.

A big discovery was the collaboration of the Ipsia school of Fermo that made us aware of the craftsmanship world and the precise mechanical work (most of them are small companies), their job culture, learning needs and insertation potentility. The internships (carried on with both Fami and Sprar investments) were useful to understand our limits in terms of competences and communication; we learnt the importance of labour style and culture. We really found out that these workers are not only engaged to the economic aspect of the job but also to the real passion for it.

The collaboration with the Ipsia was precious because we worked as partners, sharing the evaluation of the competences, combine of business context, monitoring and direct contact. We noticed that this field has good occupation opportunities.

The same thing happened with the Ial Marche into the fishing sector in san Benedetto del Tronto area. One of the difficulties was the transportation but it was solved thanks to the trasversal equipe, a voluntary and the personal organization of the beneficiary involved.

This strategy is important in order to create and connect the goals of the Sprar with the local and territorial need and occupational opportunity instead of only focusing on the Sprar beneficiaries. The last part of the project will be dedicated to this element.

Can you tell us anecdote and stories of the beneficiaries of the project?

A nice memory is when at the beginning of the internships we used to accompain the youngers; basically it gave us the opportunity to better to know each other and share some personal moments (for instance early in the morning, during the rain or tired in the evening). We did so becuase we wanted to create a favourable and positive initial experience.

During a monitoring event, the tutor referred to the interns as Debby, using a nickname (we noticed that several tutor and colleagues used to call the interns with nice and tender names) and added that since Debby was there, the fried fish was better and more tasty.

On the contrary, some clients did not appreciate the presence of a foreigner in the front bench but the tutor demonstrated a human reaction by defending the girl, who currently goes to work with a smile every day and early in the morning.

In the mechanical company, the owner helped the beneficiary with the drive lessons. Despite of this nice behaviour, at the end in the internship the guy decided not to follow. Unfortunately the initial doubts of the owner regarding the time and money spent on this guy became true.

Another girl is living a very positive experience and she satisfied all of us: one day she reacted in a very mature and responsible way by helping her tutor and a colleague during a dfficult moment.

Finally, during the visit of a house a girl threw herself into the bed showing her need to freedom and autonomy.

And regarding the activity of social housing?

There were no special practices: we went through the scouting as we usually do into the Sprar. The bond of giving a refund for the rent is an important aspect of this Fami project: otherwise the Sprar system usually offers more guarantee and coverage. It is a way to previously select the beneficiaries and reflect the steps to be followed. In any case, we preferred to execute supporting procedures (for instance advance payment in the first phase). This Fami project has stimulated a change into the Sprar project (for example the deposit in charge of the beneficiaries, the self-sustenability) in a very useful way.
